How to make a maze worksheet

  1. Choose a difficulty. Easy is 8 × 8 cells and Expert is 32 × 32. You can also set any size from 5 to 40 cells with “Custom size”.
  2. Choose how many mazes per page. One large maze, two, or four small ones. Very large mazes are limited to two per page so the walls stay readable.
  3. Edit the title. Call it “Pirate Treasure Maze” or “Week 3 Homework”. Switch the name & date line on or off.
  4. Press “New maze” until you like what you see.
  5. Print the worksheet, then print the answer sheet (it shows the solution path). To keep a PDF, choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog; to use the maze in a document or slide, press “Download PNG”.

Every maze has one start on the top edge, one finish on the bottom edge and exactly one route between them, so there is always a single correct answer to check.

Choosing the right difficulty

LevelGridCellsTypical path (winding)Suggested use
Easy8 × 864about 24 cellsBeginners and young children, big clear corridors
Medium14 × 14196about 63 cellsEveryday classroom or home worksheet
Hard22 × 22484about 124 cellsOlder children and adults who want a challenge
Expert32 × 321,024about 250 cellsLong sit-down puzzles; print one per page

“Typical path” is the average length of the correct route over 60 test mazes of each size made with the winding style.

If a child gives up quickly, drop one level or switch to four easy mazes per page so every puzzle is short. If an adult finishes in seconds, try the difficult maze page.

Winding or branching?

The style setting changes how the maze is built, not its size:

  • Winding uses a recursive backtracker. It makes long corridors with relatively few forks, so the correct route is long.
  • Branching uses a randomised Prim's algorithm. It makes many short dead ends and forks, so the correct route is shorter but there are far more wrong turns.

In our tests of 60 mazes per size, a 14 × 14 winding maze averaged about 22 dead ends and a correct path of about 63 cells; a 14 × 14 branching maze averaged about 63 dead ends and a path of about 27 cells. Pick winding for a long, flowing route and branching for lots of choices.

Printing tips

  • Pick your paper. Choose US Letter or A4 so the page fits without scaling.
  • Use black-and-white and “fit to page” in the print dialog to save ink; mazes are black lines on white.
  • Print the answer sheet separately and keep it for checking. The maze code recreates the same mazes later.
  • Thicker lines for small hands: choose an easier level — fewer, larger cells give wider corridors on the page.

FAQ

How do I make a maze worksheet?

Choose a difficulty, how many mazes per page and a title, press New maze until you like it, then print the worksheet. Print the answer sheet separately to check solutions.

Are there answers?

Yes. Tick Show answers to see the route on screen, or press Print answer sheet to print the solutions.

Can I get the same maze again?

Yes. The maze code under the settings recreates the same mazes. The page address also contains it, so a bookmark or shared link reopens the same worksheet.

What sizes and paper can I print?

Mazes from 5 × 5 to 40 × 40 cells, on US Letter or A4, with one, two or four per page.

Can I save a PDF or an image?

For a PDF choose “Save as PDF” in your browser's print dialog. For an image press Download PNG, which makes a 300 dpi page image.

Is it free to print the mazes?

Yes. There is no sign-up, watermark or limit. Print as many worksheets as you like for home, classroom or personal use.

Are my mazes or settings uploaded?

No. Mazes are generated in your browser, and nothing you type (such as a worksheet title) is sent to our servers.
